Dec. 30--A man was killed and seven other men were wounded in separate South, Far South and Northwest Side shootings Tuesday, according to Chicago police.
The fatal shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
A 23-year-old man was exiting a vehicle in the 9100 block of South Greenwood Avenue when a driver of that vehicle fired shots at him and then drove away, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.
The man was shot in the chest and the head and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Alfaro said.
He was identified as Xavier Samuel Thornton of the 9000 block of South Greenwood Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy determined that he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled homicide, according to the office.
In the latest shooting, a 32-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 11:20 p.m. in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.
The man was standing on a rear porch in the 6900 block of South Vernon Avenue when a male attacker fired shots at him, striking him in his left leg, Alfaro said.
The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
Around 10:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were wounded in a drive-by shooting around 10:30 p.m. in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.
The two men were getting into a vehicle in the 6300 block of South Artesian Avenue when a dark minivan pulled up to them and fired shots, Alfaro said.
The 22-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital. The 29-year-old was shot in the right leg and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
One block south of that shooting, another man had been wounded in a shooting Monday evening, police said. A 28-year-old man was walking outside around 8:55 p.m. when an unknown attacker got out of a vehicle and fired shots, striking him in the right leg, police said.
At the scene of the double shooting Tuesday evening, police officers blocked off a stretch of Artesian Avenue north of 64th Street with yellow crime tape.
Officers shone flashlights on the snowy ground for evidence and found several shell casings at the scene.
Blood stained snow banks on the eastern and western sidewalks along Artesian Avenue near 64th.
Residents drove by and walked by the crime scene late Tuesday evening.
Anthony Evans, 42, who lives in the neighborhood, stopped his car near the scene to see what happened.
"They're shooting here every other day," he said, shaking his head.
Earlier Tuesday, a 22-year-old man was shot at 5:46 p.m. on the 10900 block of South Racine Avenue in the Morgan Park neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.
The man was walking in the area when an unknown male attacker approached him and shot him in the foot, police said. The man was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
At 2:12 p.m. a 32-year-old man was shot on the 3600 block of West Dickens Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, Sweeney said. The man was shot in the hand and managed to get himself to St. Mary's Hospital where he was in good condition, Sweeney said.
An 18-year-old man shot in a school play lot on the 5700 block of South Michigan Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood, according to authorities.
He was shot in the buttocks at about 2:04 p.m. and was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition stabilized.
The first shooting happened about 10:52 a.m., police said. A man walked into St. Bernard Hospital Healthcare Center in Englewood on Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound to his leg, according to police.
The 33-year-old man was shot on the 6400 block of South Stewart Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood. He walked into the hospital where his condition had stabilized, police said.
Police were investigating the incident and no one was in custody, according to police.
