March 05--Two Chicago teenagers have been charged in connection with a robbery on the Red Line last month in which a cellphone and wallet were taken from a Hyde Park resident, prosecutors said Wednesday.
On Feb. 11, Joshua Shaw, 19, and Andre Jefferson, 18, both of the 900 block of West 84th Street, approached a man sitting on the platform of the Garfield "L" station, prosecutors said. They allegedly asked to use the victim's phone and then refused to give it back.
All three then got on a northbound Red Line train, where Jefferson implied he had a weapon and told the victim "you don't want to get hurt," according to prosecutors. That prompted the victim to hand over his wallet, authorities say.
There is CTA video footage of the incidents on the platform as well as the train, prosecutors said.
Shaw and Jefferson were charged with aggravated robbery, a felony. Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered each of them held in lieu of $90,000 bond at a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
According to Shaw's defense attorney, Shaw is studying sound engineering at Kennedy-King College and works at Portillo's.
