June 03--TreeHouse Foods, the private-label food manufacturer based in Oak Brook, is recalling hundreds of products that contain sunflower kernels that could be contaminated with Listeria, the company announced Thursday.
The expanded recall includes protein bars, trail mix bars and various assorted trail mix products sold throughout the country in stores such as Meijer, Hy-Vee and Roundy's, including Mariano's stories in the Chicago area. The recall is a result of the Toronto-based sunflower seed supplier, SunOpta, expanding its own recall earlier this week because of potential Listeria contamination, the TreeHouse news release said.

No illnesses have been confirmed to date, but eating food contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis. Primarily, it affects pregnant women, those age 65 or older, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An infection might present symptoms typically associated with food poisoning -- nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriages or stillbirths.
