BRIEF: Small plane carrying 2 crashes near Catalina Island airport

April 18--A small plane with two people on board smashed into the ground near the airport on Catalina Island on Sunday evening, L.A. County fire officials said.

One person was ejected during the crash, which happened about 5 p.m. near Airport in the Sky, said supervising fire dispatcher Ed Pickett.

The other was still trapped under the plane at 6 p.m., Pickett said, adding that helicopters were being used in the rescue.

The condition of both people, who haven't yet been identified, is unknown, he said.

"This is very much still happening," Pickett said.
