BRIEF: Shedd Aquarium offers extra free day for cold snap

Jan. 07--During Wednesday's cold snap, Chicago's kids will have a number of warm places to go.

The Shedd Aquarium is offering Illinois residents free general admission into its original galleries.

Admission to the Caribbean Reef, Amazon Rising and the Waters of the World galleries at the aquarium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, will be free for the day.

Residents can also purchase discounted admission to Shedd's other exhibits. The aquarium is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The Museum of Science and Industry is also open Wednesday, and offering free admission for all Illinois residents. Admission to the museum will be free on all weekdays through January 30 for state residents, the museum announced.

Certain YMCA locations across the city will also be open tomorrow to host the "School Days Out" program, which features things like arts and crafts, computer activities, homework help and gym games for kids.

Meanwhile, the Cook County Forest Preserve District announced that its sledding hills, snowmobiling locations and a cross-country skiing area will be closed to the public Wednesday because of the extreme cold.
