BRIEF: Red Line service restored downtown after report of smoke in subway

Dec. 17--CTA Red Line trains were rerouted for a short time Thursday morning in the Loop because of reports of smoke in the subway, officials said.

Trains were rerouted from the State Street subway to the elevated structure downtown between Cermak/Chinatown and Fullerton, said Jeff Tolman, a CTA spokesman. Service was restored a little after 10 a.m., but trains still were experiencing significant delays about 10:15 a.m., according to the CTA.

The fire response was declared over about 10 a.m. when firefighters found no fire after reports of smoke in the subway, according to the Fire Department. No one was injured.

Check the CTA's website for updated information.

At least one CTA train operator told passengers on the southbound Red Line before they were rerouted that there was smoke in the subway and that trains were unable to operate because of the danger that posed.

While stopped at Fullerton, a southbound Red Line train operator told passengers the train was being redirected over the Brown Line tracks because of smoke in the subway.

The train was unable go into the subway when there's smoke, the operator noted, because "we'll all die."
