1 dead, 4 wounded in shootings

Jan. 18--A man was killed and four other people were wounded in shootings citywide Sunday, Chicago police said.

At 6 p.m., police were called to the 1900 block of North Keeler Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood and found a 39-year-old man shot in an alley, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman.

The man had been shot in the back and was unresponsive. He was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and pronounced dead, Tannehill said.

At about 10 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman. He was walking in the 11500 block of South Eggleston Avenue when someone came out of an alley and shot him in both thighs. He went to Saint Bernard Hospital and his condition was stabilized.

At about 7:15 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the East Hyde Park neighborhood, Tannehill said. He was in the 5100 block of South East End Avenue when someone shot him in the leg during a robbery, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, and his condition was stabilized.

At 6 p.m. a 47-year-old man was injured in the 4600 block of South Leamington Avenue in the LeClaire Courts neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

The man was shot in the face and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

In addition to those shootings, charges were pending against a 17-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself while trying to rob someone Sunday on the South Side, police said.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the city's Chatham neighborhood, police said.

The boy was trying to rob a person when he shot himself in the leg, police said.

After a second assailant fled with the gun and police were called, the 17-year-old was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition and placed under arrest.

The robbery victim was not hurt, police said.
