BRIEF: Oilers star rookie Connor McDavid injured vs. Flyers

Nov. 04--One of the NHL's brightest young stars will be sidelined for an extended period as Edmonton Oilers rookie Connor McDavid suffered an apparent left shoulder injury in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at Rexall Place.

McDavid, whom the Oilers selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft and had just captured the league's rookie of the month award for October, left the ice late holding his left shoulder after crashing into the end boards late in the second period against the Flyers. After the Oilers' 4-2 victory, coach Todd McLellan said McDavid will be sidelined "long term."

The 18-year-old McDavid appeared to lose an edge during a rush toward the net and crashed in a heap into the boards along with Flyers defensemen Brandon Manning and Michael Del Zotto. During the intermission, McDavid was seen with a sling on his left arm.

McDavid has five goals and seven assists in 13 games this season. The Oilers are scheduled to face the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night at the United Center but McDavid will not play in the game.
