BRIEF: Man armed with knife shot by off-duty police officer, taken into custody

Dec. 21--Authorities arrested a man who was shot by a female family member who is an off-duty Chicago police officer after he approached her with a knife during a domestic-related incident in their Northwest Side home, police said.

The 52-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder Sunday and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was in good condition, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman.

The man, who is not a police officer, is in custody and charges are pending, Lemmon said.

According to preliminary information, police were called to a home on the 3800 block of North Octavia Avenue in the Belmont Heights neighborhood at 10:37 a.m. for a domestic-related incident, Lemmon said.

Police said at the home it was determined that the man had been shot by a 47-year-old female family member who is an off-duty Chicago police officer.

The woman shot the man after he allegedly approached her with a knife, police said in a statement, citing incident reports.

According to officials, the shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates shootings by police.
