BRIEF: More than 11 percent of Midwesterners move in a year, census reveals

March 19--More than 11 percent of Midwesterners found a new place to live between 2013 and 2014, on a par with the nation's 11.5 percent moving rate, according to newly released census data.

Midwest renters continued to move at a high pace -- 27 percent, compared to 5.6 percent for people living in owner-occupied units.

For the past several years, the U.S. moving rate has remained between 11.5 percent and 12.5 percent, the census said.

People used to move more frequently.

"When the Current Population Survey started collecting migration information in 1948, about one in five people moved over a one-year period," David Ihrke, a demographer with the bureau's journey-to-work and migration statistics branch, said in the report.

The moves can occur in the same county, within the state, to a different region or abroad.
