BRIEF: Metra train hits car; 2 injured including child

June 13--A woman and child were injured when their car was struck by a train near the Metra Electric's South Shore station Friday afternoon, officials said.

Both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

A man who was on the train was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in fair to serious condition with a knee injury, officials said.

The train involved in the accident remained stopped at the station at 71st Street near Yates Boulevard and South Shore Drive, and other trains were delayed about 15 to 20 minutes, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile. The accident happened at 2:20 p.m. when the vehicle drove under the rail crossing arms, said Reile.

Train #324, scheduled to arrive downtown Chicago at 2:02 p.m., were stopped at South Shore. The trains are running again, officials said.

Metra officials, crews, and local municipal authorities are on the scene working to restore train operation. Estimated time of delays are unknown. Metra will provide updated information as it becomes available.
