BRIEF: Metra BNSF train kills male pedestrian on West Side

March 16--An outbound Metra BNSF train hit and killed a man Tuesday afternoon near the border between the Little Village neighborhood and Cicero, causing extensive delays, authorities said.

Train No. 1239, which was headed to Aurora, was stopped near Cicero Avenue after it hit a pedestrian about 3:30 p.m., according to a Metra spokesman and the agency's website.

A male pedestrian was struck and killed, according to a Chicago police spokesman. The victim was a man, according to Fire Department spokesman Cmdr. Walter Schroeder.

"The duration of this delay is unknown but extensive delays are expected," according to Metra's website.

Trains began moving again about 5 p.m., with two tracks opened at walking speed and other trains being repositioned to move around the incident, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile about 5 p.m. The train involved was still stopped and delays were still expected, she said.
