Dec. 21--The Hawks needed more than regulation for the second consecutive game but they came away with another victory, this time 4-3 over the Sharks. Jonathan Toews scored the winning goal off a give-and-go with Patrick Kane at 2 minutes, 21 seconds of the extra session.
No Hossa
Before Sunday's game against the Sharks, coach Joel Quenneville would only hint that a lineup change was on the way. All he said was that it would be "up front." The lineup casualty was Marian Hossa, who sat out his first game since Nov. 6 because of an upper-body injury. It was unclear when Hossa suffered the injury. He had played in Saturday's win over the Sabres and was even on the ice for the final shift of overtime.
Eventful first
You didn't want to show up late to Sunday's game. A lot of action happened in the first period. Both Artem Anisimov and Patrick Kane scored goals in the first while the Sharks' Tommy Wingels and Joonas Donskoi scored for the Sharks. The Sharks had 13 shots on goal, the Hawks had 11.
Sharks take lead, Shaw ties it
Joe Pavelski put the Sharks ahead 3-2 in the second period when Corey Crawford could not corral a deflected shot. Pavelski got just enough of the puck to push it past Crawford and the goal line. Andrew Shaw tied it for the Hawks in the third period by fighting his way with the puck to the front of the net and beating Martin Jones.

Sharks winger and former Hawk Ben Smith played in his first game since Oct. 31. It was a long road back for Smith, who had been out with a concussion. The Hawks traded Smith and a draft pick last season for winger Andrew Desjardins.
