BRIEF: Man critically injured in West Side car repair shop fire

July 21--A man was critically injured in a fire at a Little Village auto repair shop Monday evening, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was working in the shop in the 3000 block of South Kostner Avenue about 6 p.m. when it is believed he dropped a gas tank and the fire began, said fire spokesman Larry Langford. The man was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital but may be transferred to Loyola University Medical Center's burn unit, officials said.

Someone called 911 to report the fire in the one-story business, and fire commanders quickly elevated the alarm, sending at least four fire engines, two firetrucks and a tower ladder truck, along with additional command staff and equipment, to a scene.

No one else was believed to have been in the building when the fire started, and no one else was injured, Langford said. The fire was under control by about 6:45 p.m, he said.
