Feb. 27--A 47-year-old man has been charged with killing a man and wounding a woman in a shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood last spring.
Otis Harriel, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, was charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery of discharging a firearm, police announced early Friday.
Police said Harriel shot the man and the woman about 1:15 a.m. April 26 in the 5400 block of South Winchester Avenue. The two were standing in the kitchen of a second floor apartment building when Harriel allegedly opened fire with a handgun from outside, police said in a statement.
The 21-year-old man, later identified as Martavian Emery, was hit in his chest and was pronounced dead on the scene. A 19-year-old woman was shot in her leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. She survived the shooting.
Harriel is expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon, police said.
