BRIEF: Man, 20, charged in Brainerd fatal shooting

March 27--A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with a murder earlier this month in the Brainerd neighborhood on the city's Far South Side.

Jameel Handcox, 20, of the 9100 block of South Justine Street, is facing one felony count of first-degree murder, according to a police statement.

Police said Handcox was identified as the gunman who fatally shot 26-year-old Larry Hardwin on March 9.

About 7:35 p.m., police were called to the 9200 block of South Ada Street on the Far South Side and found Hardwin lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Hardwin was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Hospital a short time later, officials said at the time.

Handcox is expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon.
