BRIEF: Magic Johnson and labor leader join L.A.'s bid for 2024 Summer Olympics

Nov. 11--The LA 2024 bid committee has added two people from very different worlds to its board of directors.

NBA great Magic Johnson and labor leader Maria Elena Durazo were named as vice chairs on Wednesday, joining the effort to bring the Summer Olympics back to Southern California.

"I was here for the 1984 Games, and I saw a city that was united and honored to welcome the world," said Johnson, who is a co-owner of the Dodgers. "As a former Olympian, I'm proud to join the LA 2024 team and give them 'an assist.'"

Durazo has a long history of union work. The powerful Los Angeles County figure -- who helped elect politicians, boost wages and push through major development projects -- currently serves as vice president for Unite Here, which represents workers in a range of industries.

LA 2024 figures to need union support as it moves forward with a campaign that must earn continuing approval from local government.

Bid committee chairman Casey Wasserman said of the new appointees: "Together they bring a great diversity of talent and expertise, with each one addressing key aspects of the bid."
