BRIEF: LAPD detective's girlfriend barricaded in Van Nuys home, police say

April 01--The girlfriend of a Los Angeles police detective barricaded herself inside their Van Nuys home Wednesday morning after a domestic dispute, authorities said.

SWAT and crisis negotiators have been talking to the woman, who has refused to come out of the couple's home in the 14900 block of Lemay Street, police said. Police believe she has access to an assault weapon, possibly an AK-47.

"Our SWAT team is going to do whatever they can to do this very peacefully and methodically," LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman told reporters.

The drama unfolded about 12:15 a.m. when police arrived at the home in response to a domestic disturbance call.

Instead, the woman, identified as a former Los Angeles city employee, barricaded herself inside the home.

LAPD Sgt. Brian Eldridge said the woman was experiencing "mental issues" and had been calling police all night.

"She is not rational," he said. "She is not stable."
