Nov. 05--South Side native Jennifer Beals has joined the cast of the film adaptation of the young adult novel "Before I Fall," Deadline reported this week.

Beals, 51, is slated to portray the mother of Samantha Kingston, a popular high school senior who gets multiple chances to relive the last day of her life to untangle the mystery of her death. Beals confirmed the news on Twitter.

Lauren Oliver wrote the book, which was released in 2010. Ry Russo-Young ("You Wont Miss Me") is slated to direct the movie with Zoey Deutch ("Ringer") starring as Kingston. Filming is supposed to start this month, according to Deadline.

Beals, who grew up in in the Chatham neighborhood and on the North Side by Lincoln Park, starred in the TNT show "Proof" until it was canceled in September after one season.
