April 30--Reigning champion Granada Hills Charter High School won the 2016 U.S. Academic Decathlon on Saturday, the fifth time in the last six years the San Fernando Valley campus has claimed the title.
The school scored 54,195.1 out of a possible 60,000 points to win the overall competition in Anchorage.
The perennial powerhouse has dominated academic competitions in recent years, last month beating out 68 teams to win it fifth state title since 2011.
The Granada Hills team members are Mark Aguila, Julian Duran, Isha Gupta, Joshua Lin, Christopher Lo, Aishah Mahmud, Melissa Santos, Mayeena Ulkarim and Jorge Zepeda.
The rigorous three-day national competition included multiple-choice tests, interviews, essays, speeches and a "Super Quiz" round in front of a live audience. The study topic this year was India.
