BRIEF: El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera locked down after student makes gun threat

Oct. 22--El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera was on lockdown Thursday morning after a student made an online threat that he planned to bring a weapon to campus, authorities said.

Deputies went to the school in the 6500 block of Passons Boulevard in Pico Rivera and pulled the student from class, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. They searched him but no weapon was found.

No students were shot or injured during the incident despite reports online of a shooting, Deputy Guillermina Saldana said.

The ordeal frightened many students and staff. Students started tweeting about 9 a.m., writing that they heard law enforcement yell at someone to "get on the ground" before gunshots rang out.

Summer Marquez, 14, a student who was in class in the K building, said rumors swirled about a student making a threat on social media to shoot up the school.

Not long after the lockdown was lifted students were making light of it online.

"YOU THOUGHT THAT WAS SCARY?! WELL YOU SHOULD COME TO THE HAUNTED THEATRE TODAY!" tweeted El Rancho Advanced Drama, the account for the school's advanced drama thespian troupe.
