BRIEF: Cook County may ask for reform of ComEd contributions policy

March 09--The Cook County Board may call on the Illinois Commerce Commission to examine ComEd's policy of using ratepayer funds for charitable contributions.

The board is considering a resolution calling for ComEd to provide customers with "full, accessible accounting of all the donations it has made with ratepayer dollars," according to a board document.

A Chicago Tribune story detailed how ComEd, the electric utility owned by Chicago-based Exelon, had collected $60 million over the past eight years and disbursed that money to politically influential organizations, some with the power to aid the state's largest utility.

State Sen. Dan Duffy has asked Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Commerce Commission to investigate ComEd's use of funds.

The County Board is scheduled to take up the resolution Wednesday. It is sponsored by Commissioner Richard Boykin, D-Forest Park.
