BRIEF: Chicago Spire bankruptcy quietly ends. Now what?

March 18--Some 17 months after the site for the Chicago Spire became entangled in court proceedings, the bankruptcy case has closed.

Now what?

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Janet Baer, who on Wednesday formally ended the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Irish developer Garrett Kelleher's Shelbourne North Water Street, is just as curious.

"We look forward to seeing what your client does with the property now," she told Brian Shaw, an attorney for Related Midwest, which owns the property at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive.

Related Midwest, which has developed several luxury high-rise rentals and condominium towers in downtown Chicago, isn't talking.

It was a quiet, quick ending for a case that captured Chicago's attention and caused a phalanx of attorneys to regularly attend court hearings.

Wednesday, there were just two lawyers present as the case ended. "Gosh, there's so few people here today," Baer said.
