BRIEF: Chicago police involved in North Side shooting

July 20--Chicago police were involved in a shooting in the Goose Island neighborhood early Monday, authorities confirmed.

At about 4 a.m., someone told police about a fight in the 1500 block of North Halsted Street, according to Chicago Police Deputy Chief Carlos Velez.

When officers arrived, they saw one man beating another with a baseball bat. A police officer told him to drop the bat, but the man continued to hit the other man, according to a statement from Chicago Police News Affairs.

At that point, the officer feared for the life of the man who was being beaten, Velez said. The officer fired his gun and struck the man who was using the baseball bat, according to police.

Both people involved in the fight were taken to area hospitals, police said, though no details about their injuries were available.
