Aug. 18--The sport of softball bade farewell to one of its great pitchers this week as Cat Osterman played her final game.
The left-hander surrendered no earned runs but suffered the loss as her USSSA Pride team fell to the Chicago Bandits, 1-0, in the National Pro Fastpitch championship in Hoover, Ala., on Monday night.
"Obviously, everybody can't have a storybook ending," she said in a news conference. "It's been a hell of a ride. ... I can't complain."
From 2001 to 2010 while playing for the national team, Osterman amassed a 59-4 record with a 0.38 ERA, helping the U.S. win an Olympic gold in 2004 and a silver in 2008. She also played on world championship squads in 2006 and 2010.
The 32-year-old Houston native will now devote herself to working as an assistant coach at Texas State University.
"I don't regret a single day of my career," she said.
