BRIEF: Bensenville village trustee pleads guilty to retail theft

Jan. 13--A Bensenville village trustee pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor count of retail theft and was sentenced to supervision and community service, according to DuPage County prosecutors and court records.

Susan Janowiak, 61, admitted guilt at her initial DuPage County court appearance. She was placed on a year's supervision and ordered to perform 30 hours of community service, and was assessed $407 in fines and costs, according to court files.

She was arrested on Dec. 11 at the Wal-Mart in Villa Park. Authorities said she tried to take several items from the store without paying. The items included jeans, gifts cards, bags, boxes and wreaths and had a total value of less than $300, police said.

As part of her guilty plea, Janowiak was ordered to stay out of the store.

Janowiak has been a Bensenville resident since 1974 and is a former village clerk and president of the park board, according to a biography posted on the village's website.
