BRIEF: Bears unveil statue of George Halas

Aug. 25--A new 1,600-pound white bronze statue of George Halas was unveiled in a small ceremony in front of Halas Hall on Sunday with the founder of the franchise portrayed in a suit and fedora and pointing outward from the building.

The statue also recognizes Halas as a Bears player, coach and owner.

Bears Chairman George McCaskey, who is Halas' grandson, told the team's website that the statue's pose was chosen by his mother and Halas' daughter, Virginia, with a "Let's go get 'em" vibe.

Dick Butkus, who played for Halas in the 1960s, also spoke at the statue unveiling.

"I was born in Chicago, born to be a Bear, born to play for Papa Bear," Butkus said. "Now I'm not sure what this statue is made out of, but I do know this: whatever it is, it's not as strong nor as tough as George Halas was in the flesh."
