BRIEF: 3 charged after Lincoln Park carjacking, police chase

May 15--Three people are facing felony charges after police say they stole a car in Lincoln Park and led police on a chase before crashing.

Jawanza Brown, 21, of the 1600 block of West Warren Boulevard, was charged with one felony count of vehicular hijacking, according to a police statement. Two others -- both 17-year-old boys -- were each charged with one count of vehicular hijacking, and one of the boys was also charged with attempted robbery.

About 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, Brown and the two teens approached a 32-year-old man as he was getting into his 2002 Chevrolet Malibu in the 1800 block of North Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park, police said.

The three implied they had a weapon, stole the car and fled. Officers responding to calls of a carjacking in the area spotted the vehicle and gave chase. The officers pursued the three to the 1900 block of West Fullerton Avenue, where the driver of the Malibu struck a restaurant sign, police said.

Brown was expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon. Police did not identify the two teens because they are juveniles.
