Nov. 22--REPORTING FROM SAN DIEGO -- Two teenagers were arrested Friday on suspicion of placing hoax threats that led to the lockdown of two San Diego high schools.
A 16-year-old girl was arrested Friday night in connection with the threat at Canyon Crest Academy. Earlier in the day, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a threat at Torrey Pines High School.
The two incidents do not appear to be related, San Diego police said.
Both threats were placed on Yik Yak, a popular social media app available on Apple and Android devices. The messages were left anonymously but police were able to identify the suspects through IP addresses.
In both cases, the schools were on lockdown for several hours Thursday, but classes resumed Friday. In neither instance was the teenager a student at the school that was affected.
Yik Yak has come under scrutiny after anonymous messages prompted lockdowns and closures at schools in California and around the country.
Earlier this week, threats made on Yik Yak against a Manhattan Beach high school prompted administrators to cancel classes for two days.
