Oct. 30--One person was killed in a crash in Gary early Friday, authorities confirmed.
At about 1:10 a.m., an SUV was seen driving quickly and weaving through eastbound lanes on I-80/94, according to Indiana State Police. It then drove off the road and hit an unoccupied vehicle on the inner shoulder.
The unoccupied vehicle caught fire. The SUV went airborne, rolled over several times, and then caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the vehicles were "completely burnt," according to a news release.
Authorities identified the deceased driver as 25-year-old Nickolas A. Alderfer, of Hebron, Ind.
All eastbound lanes were closed until about 4 a.m.; all lanes had reopened by 7:30 a.m.
