Last December Beyoncé released a self-titled video album. This is a rather different one, featuring two avant-garde noise drummers – scary, often masked Lightning Bolt/Black Pus man Chippendale (shorts), and Deerhoof’s conservatoire-trained Saunier (tight pink trews) – soloing like crazy people. Yes, that’s two 20-minute improv drum solos that go jazz, then death metal. As audio it’s just an explosion in a tin-can factory. As video, though, it’s more riveting, as you can watch Chippendale and Saunier’s hands and feet as they lock on to each other, diverge and get lost in their own warped, polyphonic click tracks.
