A Derbyshire leisure business which sells motorhomes and caravans, as well as operating its own UK holiday parks, has said it is benefiting from a staycation boom caused by Brexit uncertainty.
Don Amott, chairman of Don Amott Caravans and Motorhomes and Don Amott Parks, believes that the ongoing Brexit crisis is having an impact on people’s decisions when it comes to holidaying in the UK or abroad.
He believes that this is being reflected in the company’s growing sales, with more UK holidaymakers choosing to have a break in Britain.
As well as caravans and accessories, the firm, which is based at its ‘Leisure Kingdom’, in Egginton Road, Hilton, sells new and used motorhomes, including the latest models from brands such as Auto-Trail, Bailey, Elddis, Knaus and Swift.
At the recently held Motorhome and Caravan Show at Birmingham’s NEC, Don Amott Caravans and Motorhomes sold more than £3 million of motorhomes over the course of the six day-event, which took place earlier this month.
Don Amott Parks is made up of five parks on the Lincolnshire coast, including Lakeside Park and Nettleton Park.
Mr Amott said that since January, the company had seen a 160% increase in sales of its luxury holiday homes and lodges, compared to last year.
He said: “We’ve found that the current national crisis is making people think twice about foreign holidays.
“They just don’t know how it will affect a number of issues, from airport chaos and passport control, to healthcare, insurance and driving abroad.”
The business has been running for more than 55 years. It was founded by Mr Amott’s father, also called Don, in 1963, who started hiring out holiday homes on the east coast.
Don Amott Caravans started operating from Egginton Junction with a small garden shed for an office. Mr Amott Senior became the first person in the country to start buying caravans in bulk and today, the firm stocks hundreds of motorhomes and caravans at its Hilton base.
