Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur ... live!

Premier League: Bruno Fernandes is out but Cristiano Ronaldo is in as Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Scott Murray has the latest ...

Match report: Brentford 2-0 Burnley

Premier League: Described as the proverbial six-pointer beforehand, it was Brentford who emerged to make capital on a nervy afternoon with Ivan Toney scoring two priceless, late goals, including one from the penalty spot. Words: Julian Taylor at the Brentford Community Stadium.

James Tarkowski: “We had chances, they had a couple,” the Burnley defender tells PLP. “They got the goal at the end late on so disappointing but no time to panic. It wasn’t a bad performance but not our greatest.

“We can’t let any player break into the box like that especially someone of [Christian Eriksen’s] quality. We’ve given away too many cheap goals like that this season which needs to stop. We need to be better once again in both boxes. We have a lot more than that.

“A lot of the time if someone goes down in the box with the slightest of touches it gets given. There are plenty of teams who have to pick up points but we’ll just concentrate on ourselves. No time to panic. Plenty of games left. We need to start putting more points on the board.”

Ivan Toney: “Yeah it’s a massive step,” says Brentford’s striker in an interview with PLP following his side’s win against Burnley. “Everyone was putting our name in the hat for relegation but we don’t listen to that. Results haven’t been going our way but we haven’t lost desire. The team we have in the dressing room is more than capable of staying in the Premier League.”

We needed to get used to the way they started, but when we adapted, we controlled the game.

“We could have scored more; there were two or three chances where the last pass could have been slightly better. It was a good game against a good opponent.”

Reading 1-3 Manchester United: With the competition for European places hotting up and Manchester United very much in the mix, Marc Skinner brought his side to Adams Park in High Wycombe for the first of today’s two WSL fixtures.

Sixth in the table going into today’s game but having lost three and drawn one of their past four fixtures in all competitions, Kelly Chambers’ Reading side came up short against their visitors, going down 3-1 to a brace from Leah Galton and another goal from Alessia Russo.

Deanne Rose scored what turned out to be a consolation for Reading in the 15th minute. Russo’s goal came moments after Manchester United’s Ona Batlle saw a shot hit the cross-bar, bounce down way behind the line and out of the goal. It was incorrectly disallowed but the best team won on the day. United are in third place, three points clear of Tottenham having played one game more. Reading stay in sixth place.

Saturday clockwatch ...

The midweek Premier League fixtures mean we are left with a decidedly threadbare Saturday clockwatch, what with the lion’s share of this weekend’s top flight fixtures slated for tomorrow.

With this in mind, the pressure is on Brentford and Burnley to provide the entertainment in their role as sole 3pm kicker-offers following Brighton’s game against Liverpool, which started at the Amex Stadium at 12.30pm (GMT).

It’s half-time at the Amex, where Liverpool lead by the only goal of the game from Luis Diaz and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is very lucky not to have been sent off for taking out the Liverpool winger as he scored.

We’ll bring you team news and build-up ahead of kick-off at the Brentford Community Stadium, where a win for the visitors would take them out of the relegation zone and up two places above both Everton and Leeds United. Should Brentford prevail, they’ll pull themselves further clear of the mire but will remain a point behind Newcastle.

We’ll follow the goals as they go in and raise any major talking points in the Premier League and beyond, so don’t touch that dial.
