Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen was ‘very happy’ to be back on the pitch again despite their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday. Eriksen took to the field in senior football again for the first time since he suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark against Finland at EURO 2020 in June.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man was a second half substitute as he and his Bees teammates lost for the sixth time in seven matches to edge them closer to the relegation places. Speaking to Brentford’s club media after the game, Eriksen hailed it as a special moment to be playing again after everything he has been through.
He said: “Take away the result, I’m one very happy man. To have been through what I have been through and my family, to be back again is a wonderful feeling and I’m just happy it’s happened. It’s been very special, since day one coming here everyone has taken care of me. I’m really happy about it and everyone has been helpful. It’s been a pleasure to come here and also for the first time to be back on the pitch, it was very special.”

Goals from Joelinton and Joe Willock were enough to secure a comfortable win for the Magpies against the 10 men of Brentford. Newcastle’s fourth win in five moved themselves up to 14 th and above Saturday’s opponents for the first time this season, who are now thoroughly amongst the battle to avoid the drop.
Despite their poor form and precarious position, though, Eriksen claimed that everyone at the club is determined to secure survival. He said: “I think everyone knows, and we know as a team, that every game is very important. We are a few games in front which has given the other teams a bit of a lead to comeback, but in the end everyone is really focused on staying up. Nobody is naive but everyone is focused on doing the job and trying to stay up. I think the confidence is there too.”
