Two men, 20 and 24, killed as their car careers off bridge into river

Two men in their early 20s were killed after the car they were travelling in plunged from a bridge into a river yesterday evening.

Pictures at the scene in Sheffield show a broken rail, which it is believed the driver smashed through before landing in the River Don.

Police have today confirmed the two men who died were aged just 20 and 24, but their identities have not yet been released.

A heavy police presence remains in the area as investigators seek to establish exactly what happened.

Floral tributes from well wishers have been left at the scene of the tragic crash.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At 7.10pm last night police received reports that a vehicle had entered the river off Meadowhall Way in Sheffield.

“Two men aged 20 and 24 were taken to Northern General Hospital, where they were sadly pronounced dead.

"Family members have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.”

The spokesman also confirmed the car was not being chased by police at the time of the crash, following speculation online.

They added: "It was a very distressing incident for all involved. All emergency services were at the scene within minutes and entered the water to help.

"South Yorkshire Police will be releasing further details later."
