Suspended Tory MP in hospital suffering from 'severe shock' after sex and drugs claims

David Warburton has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital, hours after he was rocked by sex and drug allegations.

The married dad-of-two has been suspended as a Tory MP while under investigation over allegations made to Parliament's independent harassment watchdog.

His wife Harriet, who is also his paid assistant, told the BBC her husband was being treated for “severe shock and stress” but made no further comment.

Mr Warburton is facing allegations of climbing naked into a woman's bed and groping her breasts - after snorting cocaine.

An image emerged showing the MP for Somerset and Frome sitting next to an upturned baking tray with four lines of powder on it – alleged by the Sunday Times to be cocaine.

Mr Warburton allegedly snorted “line after line after line” of the drug at the home of a younger woman he met through politics. She says she was drunk and wanted him to leave after the early hours episode.

As she sobered up, she claims she emerged from her bedroom to find Mr Warburton naked.

Speaking on Saturday, Mr Warburton said: “I have enormous amounts of defence, but unfortunately the way that things work means that doesn’t come out first."

A spokesman for the Conservative Whips Office said: "David Warburton MP has had the Conservative Party whip removed while the investigation is ongoing."

It means Mr Warburton will sit as an independent MP in the House of Commons.

The allegations are being examined by Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS).

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps insisted the party took the claims seriously.

In a Sky News interview, the Cabinet minister said: “The party has, I think, withdrawn the whip, and put this under the investigation, which needs to go through its process.

“I don’t have any sort of further knowledge of it other than what I’ve read in the newspapers and what the party’s said.

“Obviously, any allegations like this need to be taken extremely carefully, but all the facts will need to be brought out as well. So until we get there I don’t think there’s much more I can helpfully add to it.”
