Teenage boy injured in Piccadilly Gardens attack with police cordon in place

A teenage boy has been injured during a “fight” in Piccadilly Gardens following a week of violence in Manchester city centre.

The victim suffered “a very minor laceration injury” to his head during the attack, police say.

Officers were called to the area at around 9.20pm following reports that a teenager had been stabbed.

When officers arrived at the scene they found an injured teenage boy.

His injuries are not thought to be serious.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a “targeted confrontation between two groups”, Greater Manchester Police said.

There is no wider threat to the public, police say.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

In an updated statement published at around midnight on Friday, police said they now believe the teenager's injuries were caused by a bottle. Officers originally reported they had been called to a stabbing in the city centre area.

Posting on Twitter, Chief Inspector Zac Fraser said: "Officers are investigating an assault which took place in Piccadilly Gardens at 2120hrs on Thursday 16th January 2020.

"A male suffered a laceration to his head, caused by a bottle, it is not believed a knife was used."

A police cordon currently in place on Piccadilly Gardens, close to Primark and Burger King, is likely to be removed shortly.

Two police cars and an ambulance are currently at the scene.

The latest attack comes just days after during a stabbing spree close to the Market Street tram stop, on Sunday night (January 12).

Police deployed Taser as they arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of serious assault.

A man has appeared in court accused of possession of a knife, affray and section 18 wounding with intent.

Just two days before Sunday's attack, on Friday (January 10), a 15-year-old boy was hospitalised after being stabbed during a fight in the Gardens.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said officers were called to Piccadilly Gardens at 9.20pm tonight following a report of a male stabbed.

“On attendance it was a very minor laceration injury to his head so the scene will be lifted,” a spokesman said.

“This appears to be targeted confrontation between two groups and there is no wider public threat.”
