BREAKING NEWS: Paisley's historic TA building in the High Street is set ablaze

A massive fire tore through Paisley’s historic TA building earlier this afternoon.

Fire crews desperately battled to bring the blaze under control after racing to the High Street site.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

The derelict former Territorial Army drill hall went up in flames around 3.30pm.

Roads around the area were closed for several hours as emergency crews dealt with the incident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 3.33pm to reports of a building fire on High Street, Paisley.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene, where crews remain in attendance.”

Lying empty: The building has caught the eye of various developers (PDE)

For decades the B-listed building was one of the jewels in Paisley’s crown.

It was designed by celebrated architect Thomas Graham Abercrombie, whose other creations include Paisley Grammar School and the town’s former YMCA building, in New Street.

Once it stopped being used by the Territorial Army, it was used as a nightclub then bought by the University of the West of Scotland before being sold to a developer in 2007.

It has changed hands several times since and now JR Construction is in the late stages of buying the building from Noah Developments.

The building has been set on fire several times and has also been vandalised.
