Eyewitness reported seeing a large police presence in the area last night, with part of the tram stop cordoned off as police carried out investigations. In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to Market Street in Manchester at around 4.20pm on Sunday 8 January 2023 to reports of a serious assault.

"A 34-year-old man was found at the scene who had been stabbed. The injuries are not thought to be life threatening. Enquiries are currently ongoing."

Kate Green, TfGM’s TravelSafe Partnership Manager, said: "While incidents like this are thankfully extremely rare, it happened at a busy stop in the middle of the afternoon and will have been concerning for those who witnessed it as well as our other passengers and the wider public. I hope the injuries are not too serious and that the person involved is able to make a full recovery.

"Our control rooms operate 24/7 and monitor feeds from more than 3,800 CCTV cameras, including across all our stops, and we will do whatever we can to help the police investigation and ensure whoever is responsible is identified and held accountable."

The Manchester Evening News has also contacted the North West Ambulance Service for a comment.
