Liverpool cancel training ahead of Arsenal clash amid Covid-19 outbreak in squad

Liverpool have cancelled a training session on Tuesday following a further Covid-19 outbreak within their squad.

The Liverpool Echo report that the Reds, who are supposed to be playing Arsenal in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday evening, have cancelled their session today as they look to combat the spread of the virus.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool fear they will be unable to play in the first-leg at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, with more members of their squad testing positive for coronavirus.

Roberto Firmino, Alisson and Joel Matip all tested positive ahead of Liverpool's draw with Chelsea at the weekend, meaning the Reds trio were unable to travel to London.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was also absent after returning a positive test. Pep Lijnders took charge at Stamford Bridge and was expected to do so again at the Emirates Stadium with the manager still isolating.

With goalkeeper Alisson isolating and definitely out of the Arsenal clash, the report claims that the EFL's rules mean that the game could be postponed if they were to lose any more goalkeepers.

The EFL say that games can be called off it teams cannot register a team of 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper.

As well as the Covid and injury issues Liverpool have to contend with, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita have all joined up with their countries ahead of this month's Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta is set to take training on Wednesday for the first time since testing positive for Covid.

Arteta was forced to watch the Gunners' agonising 2-1 defeat to Premier League leaders Manchester City from the comfort of his own home at the weekend after becoming the latest manager in the division to test positive for the virus.
