Kim Jong-un makes 'first appearance' in 20 days after death rumours

Kim Jong-un has made his first public appearance for 20 days following rumours of his death, South Korean media reports.

The North Korean dictator, 36, is reported to have he attended a completion ceremony at a fertiliser factory in Sunchon, a city in South Pyongan Province, according to Yonhap.

The reports originated in North Korean state media and have not been independently verified.

Sister Kim Yo Jong also attended and no pictures of the visit - thought to be a ribbon-cutting ceremony- have been released.

The report added people at the factory "broke into thunderous cheers of hurrah" when he appeared.

His health has been the source of much speculation in recent days.

Kim's whereabouts have been unclear since presiding over an April 11 meeting.

The report comes one day after Taiwan’s chief of intelligence said that Kim is “sick,” prompting his nation to create emergency contingency plans for a possible power struggle if he dies.

The severity of the dictator's illness has been much speculated on with concrete information hard to source inside the secretive communist regime.

The day is a major holiday in North Korea and Kim as leader usually pays a visit to the mausoleum where his grandfather lies in state.

Speculation grew on Wednesday, when US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said officials in the country "hadn't seen" Kim recently.

Citing a report by Chosun Central Broadcasting, a DPRK state television station, Seoul-based Yonhap reported early Saturday morning that on Thursday, Kim attended the completion ceremony of a fertilizer plant in Suncheon, an industrial city of roughly 300,000 just north of Pyongyang.

"The completion ceremony of the Suncheon Infertilizer Factory, which stands out as the main fertilizer production base, was held on May 1, which is the international holiday of workers around the world," CCB said, according to Yonhap.

"Our party, the Supreme Commander of the People's Republic of Korea, and comrade Kim Jong-un, the leading leader of the country's armed forces, attended the completion ceremony."
