First result of General Election 2019 as Labour hold Newcastle upon Tyne Central

The first result is in after Brits voted for the next government.

Labour's Chi Onwurah comfortably retained the Newcastle upon Tyne Central seat with 21,568 votes.

Nearest rival Tory Emily Payne picked up 9,290 votes, giving Ms Onwurah a 12,278 majority.

But she has seen her lead fall since 2017, when she won 14,937 votes.

Depressingly an exit poll has predicted Boris Johnson's Tories will win a majority of more than 80 as Labour suffers its worst election night since 1935.

Voters were kept waiting longer than normal for a first result this time around.

In 2017 Newcastle Central declared at 11.01pm.

The record fastest result was in Houghton and Sunderland South in 2015, which delivered a result just 43 minutes after polling stations closed.

The joint Sky/BBC/ITV poll forecast Boris Johnson is on course to win an overall majority of 86 in the House of Commons.

This will be the biggest victory for the party since Margaret Thatcher's in 1987.

According to the exit poll, the Tories could return 368 MPs to Westminster, with 191 for Labour .

The SNP were tipped to win 55 seats, Lib Dems 13 seats, Plaid Cymru 3, Greens one seat and others 19.

Earlier Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said: "If it is anywhere near this, you're right, this will be extremely disappointing for the party overall and our movement."

On the future of Mr Corbyn's leadership, Mr McDonnell said: "Let's see the results themselves, as I say, the appropriate decisions will be made and we'll always make the decisions in the best interests of our party."

If the exit poll is correct  Jeremy Corbyn  will face widespread calls to quit after four and a half years in which he almost tripled Labour's membership and moved the party back to the left.

Big Labour names including Keir Starmer, Emily Thornberry, Becky Long-Bailey, Angela Rayner and Laura Pidcock are all expected to throw their names in the ring in a leadership contest that could become a fierce battle for the future direction of the party.

Mr Corbyn said nothing to the waiting media as he emerged from his home in Islington tonight.
