Breakdown of Arsenal's defensive injuries as Mikel Arteta faces playing David Luiz again

Mikel Arteta faces having to play David Luiz again after his midweek horror show against Man City due to a horde of injuries to his defensive stars.

The Arsenal boss watched on as Luiz dropped a clanger to gift Raheem Sterling a goal, before clumsily hauling down Riyad Mahrez for a penalty.

Luiz had only been thrown on 25 minutes earlier but trudged past Arteta and down the tunnel after receiving his marching orders for the foul.

The Gunners are back in action on Saturday away to relegation candidates Brighton, but Arteta is short for options in his back line.

Pablo Mari had been given the nod ahead of Luiz for the clash with City, but had to be replaced after pulling up with an injury.

It has now been confirmed that the January loan signing will miss the rest of the season after suffering ankle ligament damage, which could require surgery.

He joins Calum Chambers on the sidelines, who will also miss Arsenal's remaining fixtures this season as he rehabilitates from a rupture to his left cruciate knee ligament.

Sokratis has been one of the regulars at centre-back for Arsenal this season, but won't be available for Saturday's trip to the Amex Stadium.

The Greek international is still two weeks off a return to full training as he nurses a thigh strain.

A similar timeframe has been placed on Cedric Soares' recovery after the full-back sustained a facial injury in training.

The Southampton loanee is yet to make a single appearance for the club, and his spell at the club is due to expire at the end of June.

Arsenal are expected to extend the loan, but he will not make his debut until at least July after undergoing a procedure on a broken nose.

As it stands the only fit and recognised central defenders in Arsenal's squad are Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding - the latter of whom is yet to start a Premier League match under Arteta.

To make matters worse for the Gunners' boss, he will also be without defensive midfield duo Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka.

Both players have got ankle injuries and are not expected to return to training until at least a fortnights time.
