USA Swimming has condemed its own athletes’ “lapse in judgement” and the US Olympic Committee has apologised to the Olympic host for the “distracting ordeal” of Ryan Lochte’s conduct in Brazil. They appear to go along with Rio police’s assertion that the swimmer had given a false account of events on Sunday evening, when he claimed to have been robbed at a gas station.

Chuck Weigus, USA Swimming’s executive director, said in a statement released on Thursday of the events, which also involved Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and James Feigen, who remain in Brazil:

“The last five days have been difficult for our USA Swimming and United States Olympic families. While we are thankful our athletes are safe we do not condone the lapses in judgement and conduct that led us to this point ... It is not representative of what is expected as Olympians, as Americans, as swimmers and as individuals.”
