Braveheart actor supports campaign against Loch Lomond Flamingo Land development

Opponents of Balloch’s disputed Flamingo Land development have received a boost after a Scots’ screen star gave his backing to the campaign against the venture.

Angus Macfadyen, best known for his role as Robert the Bruce in Braveheart, met with campaigning MSP Ross Greer, inset, to pledge his support to the campaign against the West Riverside attraction.

It comes in the week it was revealed that the judgement on whether the development will go ahead will be made at the end of September.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 24 when the decision will be taken whether to grant permission for the resort or not.

The actor joins over 57,000 objectors who waded into the controversy over the Loch Lomondside site via an online objection portal launched by Green MSP Ross, who reckons film insiders like Angus can help promote the destination as a film backdrop instead.

Ross, who represents the West of Scotland, said: “I’d like to thank Angus for his support for the campaign. He’s one of a growing number of people who know that iconic and beautiful locations like this need to be protected, not irreparably damaged for the sake of 125 lodges, a hotel, a water park and much more. His passionate support for Scotland’s natural beauty is a real boost in our fight to save Loch Lomond.

“With the promised net number of jobs created by Flamingo Land having now dwindled towards zero, the National Park and Scottish Enterprise should instead be focusing on how preserving and protecting Loch Lomond’s world famous natural environment can in fact create far more jobs than unwelcome resort plans like this.

“Film and TV production is exactly the kind of industry to focus on.

“Screen sector insiders like Angus know that Scotland’s landscape has a reputation known across the globe, in no small part due to Loch Lomond. We’ve had some big successes recently, with films such as Outlaw King shooting near Luss and in turn supporting the local economy in that area. Let’s put the work in to attract more of this kind of business, which showcases the unspoilt beauty of Loch Lomond to the world.”

Patriot Angus also produced and starred in the new Robert the Bruce biopic which hit screens this summer.
