Brave swimmers take New Year's Day dip at secret beach

It might have have been the hottest New Year's Day on record, but it's still not exactly swimming weather.

But that didn't put off daring swimmers who kicked off the new year with an 'exhilarating' dip in freezing waters at a secret beach.

Members of the January Daily Dip team gathered outside the Shepherds Rest Inn at 10.30am before embarking on a steep and muddy climb to Gaddings Dam beach at Todmorden, YorkshireLive reports.

There, the team changed into their swimsuits before rising over the crest of a hill to the sound of a bugle and charging into the water.

It marked the first of 31 consecutive cold water swims which are being held to raise money and awareness for the homeless charity, Crisis UK.

Last year's instalment of the event saw the group raise £55,000 for the charity, a total the group is confident they can surpass this time around.

Laura Davies, 48, was one of those to take to the water on Saturday morning.

She told Yorkshire Live : "It was really exhilarating and really wonderful to get together with so many people who are going to dip every day.

"This started with two people six years ago, and now we have 40 to 50 people all over Britain."

Asked what drove her to take part in the fundraiser, Laura said: "I do this, personally, because I love getting out into the landscape - and I live in Todmorden for that reason.

"Also, I am really happy to share that I have low moods sometimes, we all have issues, and this is the best thing I have experienced for mental well-being.

"It gets you out of the house and gets you meeting like-minded people.

"It is quite a big thing to get into the cold water, and to do so regularly. It is about getting into the right mindset. Once you get that, you feel so strong."

Cei Paynton spoke to Yorkshire Live immediately after climbing out of the water. She said: "Every day, we will be getting into freezing cold water, whether it's rainy, snowy or icy, to do a bit of a 'daily vigil' and think about homelessness.

"We're choosing to take our clothes off and get into cold water, but people don't choose to be homeless."
