Brave Leeds landlord chases bloodied thug who smashed up windows of his pub

A pub landlord says he had to chase down a man who was smashing up windows at the Old Golden Lion in Beeston Road in the early hours this morning (Tues).

John Taggart said he ran downstairs and grabbed the man after hearing the commotion at around 3am and saw shattered glass and ‘blood everywhere’.

The landlord at the Golden Lion pub in the Beeston area of Leeds had heard a disturbance between 3am and 3.30am and found the bloodied thug.

He said he was told that the man, who allegedly had a gash on his arm, was rushed to hospital.

John said: “It happened last night. I heard a disturbance between 3am and 3.30.

"A man was smashing on the windows (of the pub). I ran down and grabbed him. There was blood everywhere. He had a gash on his arm. The cordon was gone by 11.45am."

Police were seen guarding a huge cordon outside the pub on Beeston Road this afternoon.

At least three officers remained at the scene to block the entrance of the building following the shocking events in the early hours.

Police tape was also in place outside Juicy African Kitchen on the street.

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to reports of an attempted burglary at around 4am.

A man in his 40s, who hasn't been named by police, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary of the pub and of an adjoining business after he was detained by members of the public.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "At 4.12am today, police were called to an attempted burglary at the Golden Lion pub, in Beeston Road, Leeds, where a suspect had been detained at the scene by members of public.

"Officers attended and arrested a man in his forties on suspicion of attempted burglary of the pub and of an adjoining business.

"He was treated at hospital before being taken to custody. Enquiries are ongoing."
