Brave Coast Guard crew rescue two people who got into difficulty while sailing near Dalkey

The Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard and RNLI lifeboat rescued two people who got into difficulty while sailing out near Dalkey earlier today.

As weather conditions changed, a strong head wind came across the water as they attempted to get back to Coliemore harbour.

The Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard said: "Two people aboard a small punt got into difficultly off Dalkey sound, as weather conditions changed and were struggling to get back to Coliemore harbour.

"A concerned member of the public alerted the Coast Guard to the situation. RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station launched their inshore Inflatable and a Coast Guard team was sent to get on eyes on the punt.

"The casualty was identified and the RNLI inshore took them on tow to Coliemore harbour in a strong head wind. All were ok.

"Please remember to plan ahead, check the weather, bring a handheld VHF or mobile phone and have appropriate life jackets. If you see anyone in difficultly in or near the water, dial 112/999 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard."

Laura Jackson, Dun Laoghaire RNLI’s Community safety officer, and the crew that responded said: "It is important to highlight the RNLI and Irish Coast Guards message at the moment asking people to take extra care when using the sea, please make sure you have a plan of action in case you get into difficulty, always check the tide times and weather conditions along with having a method of communication to call for help if needed.

"Dun Laoghaire RNLI remains on call and is fully operational during the Coronavirus pandemic. While there is no crew training or exercises taking place, our volunteers are here, ready to respond to those in need."
