Brain surgeon was so drunk behind wheel he had to go to hospital after crash

A brain surgeon narrowly escaped jail after being found slumped behind the wheel of his crashed 4x4 while six times over the drink drive limit.

Ajay Gupta, 61, was so drunk he had to be rushed to hospital by paramedics after the mid-afternoon smash in Worcester in July.

He went on a boozing session after rowing with his mum over his decision not to attend his dad’s funeral in India.

Gupta crashed his Audi Q3 into a parked car and was found asleep inside the wreckage, surrounded by empty alcohol bottles.

He was six times over the limit and so drunk he needed to be taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

Gupta, of Worcester, was still more than four times over the limit when later tested at a police station.

He admitted drink driving and was given a 12-week suspended prison sentence and banned from the road for 50 months.

Gupta was also ordered to do 160 hours of unpaid work, pay court costs and a victim surcharge totalling £257.

The court heard he had a previous drink driving conviction from 2015 and had completed a drink awareness course.

Richard Hull, defending, said dad-of-two Gupta was “deeply ashamed of his behaviour”.

He worked as a brain surgeon in India and is now employed as a brain rehabilitation doctor in Leamington Spa.
