Bra expert shares three crucial steps to get a 'good fit' without a tape measure

It's no secret that underwear isn't the cheapest thing to buy, so you want to make sure you're getting the most for your money when buying a bra - and getting one that actually fits.

But how do you tell which size is right for you and whether your current bras actually fit how they are supposed to?

According to a fitting expert, there are three steps you should follow to work out if your bras are a 'good fit' - and they're very easy to do for yourself.

Mercie Smith, the Assistant Manager at Bravissimo's Oxford Circus store, shared her top tips with The Mirror.

She explains how often you should be getting a fitting and why they don't use standard tape measures at their store to work out your size.

Mercie said: "We recommend coming for a bra fitting if you've had any body changes recently, or if you feel like your bra is no longer supporting you or it doesn't feel comfortable. As a rough guide, we recommend getting a fitting every six to nine months.

"At Bravissimo we don't use tape measures to work out your bra size, we do it by eye, checking the bra that you're currently wearing, looking at the back band and the cups to see if there's any bulging, and then we decide which size we think will be best for you."

Once a Bravissimo expert has picked out a size for you to try, they then conduct a three-step check to work out if the bra is actually a good fit for you.

The first step is to look at the middle of the bra and see if it is sitting close and flat against your breastplate.

Next, they look at the cups and how the breast tissue fits into them.

Mercie explains: "The second step is to check if the majority of your breast tissue is sitting within the cups of the bra from the sides all the way to the middle."

Finally, they examine the band to see if it's sitting relatively flat across the middle of your back.

Once they've found you the perfect fit for your body, the experts may offer some words of advice for caring for the bra to ensure you get the most out of it, and to save you from having to buy another anytime soon.

"When you buy a bra you really want it to last, so our top advice is to hand wash rather than putting them in the washing machine, don't put them against any direct heat like on a radiator or in the tumble dryer and you should rotate your bras depending on how many you have, washing and wearing alternatively," Mercie adds.

This comes after the bra fitting expert told The Mirror that many women have been making big mistakes when putting their bras on.

She revealed that many people put their bra on backward and 'swivel' it round to the front, pulling the cups up and sorting the straps.

But 'swivelling' the bra can actually damage it, messing up the underwire over time and bending it out of shape.

Instead, they recommend 'falling in' or 'falling forward' to put your bra on, so your breasts fall into the cups and you do the hooks up around your back.
